IB Chemistry is an IB course belonging to Group 4 ‘Sciences’ of the IB Diploma Programme. IB Chemistry is a comprehensive coverage of multiple topics ranging from molecular chemistry, energetics, to periodicity, chemical kinetics, and equilibrium. Chemistry is the branch of science that deals with the study of matter, properties and components of matter, and the energy that is released or absorbed when the matter is subject to environmental changes.

IBDP chemistry is the experimental science which involves design investigation skills involving the collection, analysis, evaluation, and communication of data by the IB Diploma Programme students, who are aiming to take up engineering, medicine or any natural science domain.

IB Chemistry HL SL difference

IB chemistry HL SL difference is what students want to understand.is one of the most sought after questions for students. Like any other IB HL and IB SL, HL takes 240 instruction hours while SL takes 150 instruction hours. Where IB Chemistry HL and IB Chemistry SL are similar is that both first 11 topics in 95 instruction hours. While IB Chemistry HL requires you to study one of the four options A-D more for 25 instruction hours, IB Chemistry SL needs you to do the same for 15 hours- the only difference is that IB Chemistry HL is dealt with at a deeper level. in comparison with IB chemistry SL where one of the options A-D is learnt to a less deep level for 15 hours. IBDP chemistry HL deals with certain additional topics like 12-21.  

IB Chemistry IA

IB chemistry IA format requires clear concise selection and statement of the research question, a comprehensive background information in the introduction citing reasons for the selection of the title, prediction of the outcome, procedure or method of conducting the research, analysis, evaluation, and citation.

IB Chemistry IA format is very structured. It requires you to choose a title and base your specific research question you want to explore. Of course, as a background information it requires you to personally engage with the title to reinforce your choice of research question. Frame your research hypothesis. Your research question should be based on environmental safety and ethical stance. Evaluate whether your investigation results authenticate your hypothesis with the use of qualitative and quantitative tools. Remember not to introduce any new concept in the conclusion. Your IB Chemistry IA conclusion is a summary of focus, processes, outcomes; along with which there is a window of reflection on the challenges you have encountered.

IB Chemistry Syllabus

IB Chemistry syllabus will give you an overview on IB Chemistry HL and IB Chemistry SL. Both the levels have the core coverage with the recommended teaching hours as 95. The IB Chemistry core has 11 topics: Stoichiometric relationships, Atomic structure, Periodicity, Chemical bonding and structure, Energetics/thermochemistry, Chemical kinetics, Equilibrium, Acids and bases, Redox processes, Organic chemistry, Measurement and data processing.

The additional higher level (AHL) covers Atomic Structure, The periodic table-the transition metals, Chemical bonding and structure, Energetics/thermochemistry, Chemical kinetics, Equilibrium, Acids and bases, Redox processes, Organic chemistry, Measurement and analysis.

Option topics are Materials, Biochemistry, Energy, Medicinal chemistry which are dealt with for 15 hours in IB Chemistry SL and 25 hours in IB Chemistry HL.

The practical scheme of work has 40 recommended hours for IB Chemistry SL and 60 recommended hours for IB Chemistry HL. The practical scheme of work involves practical activities of 20 hours for SL and 40 hours for HL. Each HL and SL has 10 hours of Internal Assessment and 10 hours of Group 4 project.

IB Chemistry assessment outline

There are four assessment objectives in IB Chemistry, which are to demonstrate facts, concepts, terminologies, methodologies and techniques, and communicating scientific information; to apply the same components; to formulate, analyse and evaluate the hypotheses, research question, primary and secondary data, methodologies and techniques, scientific explanations; demonstrate the appropriate research, experimental, and personal skills necessary to carry out insightful and ethical investigations.

IB Chemistry exam

IB Chemistry exam gives an overview of the IB Chemistry SL and HL exam.

IB Chemistry SL has Paper 1 for 45 minutes, Paper 2 for 1 hour 15 minutes, and Paper 3 for 1 hour.

 IB Chemistry HL Paper 1 for 1 hour, Paper 2 for 2 hours 15 minutes, and Paper 3 for 1 hour 15 minutes.

IB Chemistry SL:

  • Paper 1 has 30 multiple-choice questions
  • Paper 2 has two parts. For Section A, you need to answer all of four compulsory short responses and for Section B, you need to select one essay question (you choose between three options).
  • Paper 3 has two parts. Section A has one data-based question and several short-answer questions on experimental work. Section B has short-answer and extended-response questions from one option. 

IB Chemistry HL:

  • Paper 1: 40 multiple-choice questions
  • Paper 2: two parts, Section A: answer all of four short response questions that each can have between 3-10 parts and Section B: pick two essay questions (you choose between four options)
  • Paper 3 has questions on core, AHL and option material.  Section A has one data-based question and several short-answer questions on experimental work.  Section B has short-answer and extended-response questions from one option. 

For Paper 1 you are not permitted to use calculator and you will be provided with a periodic table. For Papers 2 and 3, you are permitted to use calculator and you will be provided with IB Chemistry data booklet.

IB Chemistry past papers

You should practice a good number of IB Chemistry past papers meant for 3 hours for SL and 4.5 hours for HL. When you solve your IB Chemistry past papers, you need to be steadfast and focused enough to maintain the stipulated time period for IB chemistry exam.
